Doing nursing job (at home-nursing)

My wonderful job at home-nursing.

I am enjoying my work.
Being a nurse at home nursing I  meet people at all ages
and in all walks of life.
I meet people at the  most vulnerable
moment of their life.

This job requires a lot from me,
I need to make plans, learn how to prioritize.
Learn how to work independently.
Communicate properly.
Learn to follow up, observe and know what to observe,
To evaluate, to assess,
to take responsibilities.
know the procedures, the task.
Yes, it is a fulfilling and rewarding job for me.
A dream come true.

I am playing more than one role here.
Being a nurse, is a profession where I am regarded as expert.
In several areas.
As this is being expected from you by profession. On top of that you have to know the rules
And the regulations for the patients and for yourself as a health-worker.

Your patients and their next of keen would for example like to ask you questions.
You give them the answer if you can, if not then you make research.
Talk to your co-worker or your leader.
As a nurse it is expected that you deal difficult situations that comes up.
You will also learn to reflect on situations that occurred, to learn from it.
You will learn to deal ethical dilemmas.

You will meet patient and their next-of-kin at vulnerable moments,
with hopes and compassion.
You have to extend a loving hand, a touch on their cheek, a pat on their shoulder.
You regard each patient as individual and human with each own need and goals.
You give them proper care  and allot them proper time and attention.
You give them medicines, sometimes they take it, sometimes not,
know how to deal with the situations. Do not force, not unless it is a matter
of life and death.
It is difficult, and in case like this, you may need a special authorization from the doctor.
Patients have rights and they also are protected by law.

Learn to administer your work. Out there, you are alone
and you only have mobile phone with you and your common sense and
sound-judgement. At times you have to make use of your intuitions
when your mental power doesn't work ultimately for you.
You don't gamble on patient's life, yet you have to take some steps.
Using the best of your abilities.
Everything has its consequence,
When you make mistakes, be aware to admit it, follow the standard procedure
and make report for deviation.
Between you and the patient, be ready to ask for apology if you hurt the feeling.
Between you and co-workers, you do the same.

Teamwork.
There are situations where you are to help other nurse or a care-giver when it is needed.
You ask for help when you need to, and offer some help when you can.
Be supportive and have an open mind.

At patient's house.
You are a visitor.
You are to observe house-rules and
remember that even if you are a professional on duty,
you are at patients house.
They have the power to throw you away if you don't behave.
Show respect. Allot some time. Each patient has the right for it.
Make them feel that you have time for them and don’t
give hint that you have plenty work to do according to your task-list.
Most patients can read your body language.
Speak slowly and clearly so the patients can hear.
Make yourself visible for the patient.
Remember some elderly patients have impaired or reduced sense of hearing or sight.
Give the impression of being prepared and focused.

About myself as a person.
What differs me from anybody else
is my being a person with different upbringing
and background.
I came from two different cultures that gives me benefits.
I am an immigrant in this country and i needed to learn and adjust a lot of things.
I needed to learn the language, most of all,
and learn the culture and practices
Lear the traditions of the norwegian people.
I also needed to have knowledge about other cultures as we have patients
and families from other countries.
I feel being privileged and lucky to be in this country
Feeling to have enjoyed life here and the many possibilities that i have to
develop my career. I know that I didn't have the same possibilities in the country
where I came from.
Being adult, I have more experienced in life that helped me deal with problems and challenges
than the younger people.
What i have experienced in the past taught me a lot.
My knowledge and experience in various fields through previous jobs,
give me ballast that i need.
The desire to help and to care is but a natural part of me, since I was small.
Taking responsibility of my younger siblings since we were a family of eight children.
And I am the eldest girl and therefore higher responsibility as right-hand to my mother.

Patients expectations.
It is a nurse job to help patient achieve their goal  as needy,
and with my assistance that they will be able to do part of the task themselves,
while gaining back some strength after sickness and operations.
As a nurse, you mean security for many patients.
For instance, one patient says this. " Just as I know that you are sitting
here while I am taking a shower, gives me a huge feeling of security"
As a nurse, you give information, explanation and guidance.
Most of them would like to do things themselves, in self-care and personal hygiene
and doing the Activities of daily-living (ADL)

Finding the balance.
Meeting with patient requires insight,
That while giving help respecting their privacy at the same time as an individual
coming that near them but not that close.
Assisting them, but not taking them the liberty to do the chores
and the task themselves.
I see to it that they get the assistance and help when needed but not overtake for
the patient. It is a matter of knowing and finding the balance.
My task is to see to it that they get the proper care, the medicine,
Help them to relieve their pain.
And give them the necessary health assistance.
As a nurse, I must be sensitive enough to know when to help and not
give too much help. It is not the intention.
It is important to interpret some signs and understand some hints.

My goal.
To become a happy nurse,
I need to see the individual person behind the sickness and the illnesses.
I need to meet the patient as a human being.
I need to know some background stories of the patient and the family.
The more fundamental knowledge I have on the patient which I have a duty of secrecy
For, the better job I can do.
It is important to upkeep patient’s feeling of security & integrity.
It is my duty to help the patient feel that they have control of the situation
control of their own life.
For this is what matters most.
